GARY M. FEGEL
Founder & Chairman
Gary Fegel founded GMF Capital in 2013.
Prior to GMF, Gary was a Senior Partner at Glencore Plc., one of the world’s largest commodity trading and mining companies where he was responsible for the global aluminum business.
Prior to that, he worked as a trader for UBS and Credit Suisse in their derivatives departments in Zurich, London and New York. In addition to real estate, healthcare and credit, Gary invests in and manages a variety of technology, consumer and commodity businesses, and sits on the boards of several private companies. Gary holds an M.B.A. from the University of St. Gallen.
Co-Founder & CEO
Jay Lobell co-founded GMF Capital with Gary Fegel. Jay runs GMF on a day-to-day basis and is closely involved in sourcing and evaluating real estate and healthcare investment opportunities. Jay also serves on the boards of selected healthcare operating companies.
Prior to co-founding GMF, Jay served as President of Meridian Capital Group, LLC, the nation's second-largest mortgage intermediary, where his focus included charting business strategy and creating new businesses such as Beech Street Capital, an agency lender, and Meridian Investment Sales, a sales brokerage. During that time, Jay undertook several dozen real estate acquisitions, often utilizing the Co-Sponsor strategy that is now a foundation of GMF. Prior to that, Jay served as President and Chief Operating Officer of a national biotechnology development and investment firm. Previously, Jay was a partner at Covington & Burling LLP, a national law firm, where he advised companies and individuals in a variety of regulatory, transactional and litigation matters. Jay holds a J.D. from Yale Law School where he was Senior Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
JEFFREY D. SELINGER
Partner & Chief Investment Officer
Jeff Selinger, alongside Jay Lobell, leads the sourcing of real estate investment opportunities and potential sponsor partners as well as the development of new investment products. Jeff is involved in several facets of GMF, including spearheading acquisitions for the company, with a focus on managing the sourcing and underwriting teams, as well as overseeing the firm’s asset management, investor reporting and other business operations functions.
Prior to joining GMF, Jeff was a Managing Director of Vanbarton Group, where he was responsible for sourcing, underwriting and execution of equity and credit acquisition opportunities. Jeff consummated more than $2 billion of investments across various property types and locations in U.S. markets on behalf of that firm’s institutional pension fund clients. Prior to joining Vanbarton in 2009, Jeff was an investment professional at Lehman Brothers where he evaluated investments on behalf of its real estate private equity funds. Jeff was previously an Investment Banking Senior Analyst at Merrill Lynch. Jeff holds a B.S. from the Stern School of Business at New York University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Managing Director & Head of Healthcare
Dan is responsible for sourcing and executing GMF’s healthcare real estate investment opportunities and identifying potential operating partners.
Prior to joining GMF, Dan was a Director at MTS Health Partners, an investment banking and advisory firm dedicated solely to the healthcare industry. During his tenure at MTS, Dan advised both public and private companies across a wide range of healthcare services sectors, including assisted living, home health, hospice, and long-term/post-acute care, completing transactions with an aggregate value of over $3 billion. Prior to joining MTS in 2011, Dan was a Senior Associate at Deloitte Advisory where he advised companies in healthcare services on valuation and transactional matters. Dan holds a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Notre Dame as well as a J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.
Managing Director, Healthcare
Frank Small sources investment opportunities and potential sponsor partners for healthcare real estate.
Prior to joining GMF, Frank was a Managing Director at Fortress Investment Group, where he focused on healthcare real estate and oversaw New Senior Investment (NYSE: SNR), a $3 billion publicly traded healthcare REIT with 150 assets across the US. Prior to joining Fortress, Frank was the founder and managing principal of 12 North Capital LLC, an investment management and advisory firm that partnered with institutional investors investing in healthcare real estate. Frank was previously the global head of healthcare real estate investing for JER Partners, where he completed $4 billion of investments. Frank started his career in commercial real estate with Jones Lang LaSalle before moving to Cerberus Real Estate. Frank holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.B.A. from NYU Stern School of Business.
Director, Project Management
Amy Fischer oversees construction projects and is actively involved in asset management across the GMF portfolio.
Amy has 20 years of property management and construction experience, during which time she has overseen or completed real estate redevelopment and construction projects and managed assets in more than a dozen states.
Prior to joining GMF, Amy was Senior Development Project Manager at Hutton, a fully-integrated retail development company based in Tennessee. Amy was previously Director of Operations at Vanbarton Group, where she led a team of property and construction personnel charged with the management and redevelopment of a 36-property portfolio owned by a public pension fund. Amy started her real estate career as multifamily leasing consultant and subsidized housing program manager. Amy holds a B.A. from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
WILLIAM J. GRANT, JR.
Vice President, Acquisitions
Bill Grant coordinates the asset management program and is responsible for sourcing and underwriting real estate investment opportunities.
Prior to joining GMF, Bill spent nearly seven years at Cerberus Real Estate Capital Management executing opportunistic real estate investments in the U.S. and internationally. At Cerberus, Bill evaluated investments across numerous asset classes and throughout the capital structure using a variety of debt and equity structures. Bill also was responsible for asset management and disposition of existing investment positions. Prior to joining Cerberus, Bill was an Analyst at Duff & Phelps.Bill holds a B.S. in Finance and Accounting from Boston University.
Vice President, Acquisitions
Scott Liebman sources, underwrites and asset manages real estate investments for GMF.
Prior to joining GMF, Scott worked with high net worth investors investing equity alongside operating partner/sponsors throughout the United States. From 2006 through 2014, he was a Managing Director at UBS AG, where he managed a global portfolio of commercial real estate debt and equity. Prior to UBS, Scott originated debt and equity investments for Emigrant Savings Bank as well as more than $1 billion in high yield investments at Commercial Ventures, the merchant banking division of GMAC Commercial Mortgage. Previously, he was a Vice President at Citigroup where he asset managed, liquidated and worked-out a multi-billion dollar distressed real estate portfolio and then originated and structured $700 million of securitized mortgage loans. Scott began his real estate career at Cushman & Wakefield and his business career at Bankers Trust Company. Scott holds a BA in Economics from St. Lawrence University.
Jared Frydman is responsible for sourcing, underwriting and asset managing real estate investments.
Prior to GMF, Jared worked at Northwood Investors analyzing and executing real estate equity and debt investment opportunities. Before joining Northwood, he was a member of Citigroup’s Real Estate & Lodging Investment Banking Group, where he focused on corporate advisory assignments and capital markets transactions for the firm’s real estate and lodging clients. Jared holds a B.S. in Economics from Johns Hopkins University.
Analyst, Asset Management
Ari Rosenblum is responsible for supporting GMF’s asset management function and analyzing performance of GMF’s investment portfolio.
Prior to joining GMF, Ari was a Senior Audit Associate in the Financial Services Audit practice at Ernst & Young where he performed and managed GAAP testing of financial statements and disclosure requirement implementations on various client engagements. Ari holds a B.A. from Beth Medrash Govoha and an M.S. in Accounting from Farleigh Dickinson University.
Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer
Judith Ottensoser is responsible for finance, accounting, tax, technology and human resources.
Previously, Judith was a Managing Director in the Distressed Debt Strategies Group and COO/CFO at Napier Park Capital Partners, an entity formed as a 2013 spin-out from Citibank’s alternative investments platform. Judith had been a Managing Member of Epic Asset Management which joined Citi in 2008. Judith was previously an Investment Banking associate and an analyst at Goldman Sachs & Co. Judith holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.
Executive Vice President & General Counsel
Simon Marciano is responsible for all legal and compliance matters, and instrumental in devising and implementing GMF’s business strategy.
Prior to joining GMF, Simon was a Principal in the law firm of Neuberger, Quinn, Gielen, Rubin and Gibber, P.A. As a member of Neuberger’s Real Estate Practice Group, Simon’s primary areas of focus were joint ventures, acquisition and development and securitized finance. Simon holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he currently serves as an adjunct-professor, and a B.A. and M.A. from Ner Israel Rabbinical College.
Managing Director, Business Development
Douglas McKeige is responsible for business development and relationship management.
Prior to GMF, Doug ran business development at hedge funds Balestra Capital and Fort, LP. At both firms, he was instrumental in growing assets under management through educating and communicating with institutional investors about firm investment strategies and positioning. Doug practiced law from 1986 to 2006, first at Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison and then spent the core of his legal career at Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann, LLP, where he was Co-Managing Partner and ran the firm’s client development and case origination process. He received a B.A. in Economics from Tufts University and a J.D. from Tulane Law School where he was Articles Editor of the Tulane Law Review.
Managing Director, Capital Markets
Stephen Lobell’s responsibilities at GMF range from co-investor development and management to co-sponsor sourcing and structuring. Stephen works with senior management in analyzing prospective transactions from a high net worth investment perspective and devotes substantial attention to the identification and development of alternative co-investment sources.
Stephen founded SL Online Ventures, a platform he continues to operate, which is focused on high-end travel and entertainment programs as well as technology venture capital. His educational background includes degree programs in economics at the University of Maryland and comparative law at Ner Israel Rabbinical College.
Director, Investor Relations & Marketing
Christie Philbrick-Wheaton is responsible for investor relations, client reporting and marketing initiatives.
Prior to GMF, Christie was Vice President and Head of Investor Relations at Metropolitan Real Estate, a subsidiary of The Carlyle Group, where she led the team responsible for all aspects of investor relations and partnership reporting. Before Metropolitan, she was a Vice President in the Real Estate Equity Group at Ares Management where her responsibilities included investor relations and fund analysis as well as portfolio and select asset management. She began her career in the Investor Relations and New York Office divisions of Vornado Realty Trust. Christie holds an M.S. in Real Estate Finance from the New York University Schack Institute of Real Estate and a B.A. in Religious Studies from Colgate University.
